The first title match of the event was contested for Jersey All Pro Wrestling's (JAPW) Light Heavyweight Championship, which NJPW wrestler Jushin Thunder Liger had captured the previous December. The event featured eight matches, three of which were contested for championships. The third and final event on the NJPW Invasion Tour 2011: Attack on East Coast tour took place on May 15, 2011, at the Asylum Arena in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
IWGP Heavyweight Championship matches are, instead, featured at King of Pro-Wrestling, held soon after in early October. Since 2014, Destruction has not featured IWGP Heavyweight Championship matches, but has been headlined by matches for other titles or the Tokyo Dome IWGP Heavyweight Championship challenge right certificate, the prize for winning the G1 Climax. Destruction also continues the road to the January 4 Dome Show, which starts at G1 Climax. Destruction is currently held in late September as the first major event since the conclusion of G1 Climax with several matches at the event often stemming from previous matches in the G1 Climax. Since 2015, the event has aired worldwide on NJPW's internet streaming site, New Japan Pro Wrestling World. From 2013 to 2014, the event also aired outside Japan as an internet pay-per-view (iPPV). The event has been held since 2007 as a pay-per-view (PPV).
